Updates on the new place

I’ve been living in my new place for about 2 weeks now and I really love it.  I have 7 housemates and we all live on the second floor of a 2 story building.  Below us lives the owner and her daughter as well as another family.  The only time I see the owner is when she comes upstairs to hang her laundry out on the roof or when something needs to be fixed.  There are the occasional karaoke sessions on the weekends down in her place and you all know how I feel about karaoke.  She also let me bake some cupcakes in her kitchen since we don’t have an oven upstairs.  Her sweet little 9 year old daughter helped me make the cupcakes. I love that girl. She looks so much like my little sister Ambie when she was that age so I can’t help but squeeze her to bits because she reminds me of my cute little sister who I miss so much.

All of the people I live with are really nice, laid back and cool from what I can tell so far.  My favorite roommates are Gaston and Analuz because they have a lot of character and are very social.  Gaston speaks english and is really into Madonna.  We’ve already had a few great conversations over mate and alcohol and I know I can count on him to become a good friend of mine.  Analuz is really funny and crazy so I can relate to her really easily.  The other roommates I don’t know very well but whenever we cross paths in the kitchen there is never an awkward silence.  They are interested in why I’m here so I’m constantly answering their questions.  They are also really helpful with things whenever I need something or don’t know something.  I don’t forsee any drama with them in the coming months — fingers crossed.  With Laila, I had a bad feeling about her from the start but I ignored it because I loved her house.  Bad move, she was not a good choice.  With my friend Anne, I had a bad feeling because I didn’t know her husband that well and I knew I’d be changing their lifestyle by moving into their house but I still ignored my signs.  Luckily she and I are still friends but i’ll admit that things are a bit off now.  I didn’t have any bad feelings when I initially saw this current place and I haven’t had any bad feelings with any of the people so far so I think that is a good sign.

My room is nice and big since it is meant for 2 people.  I have 2 beds and a large armoire.  The room even has fluorescent lighting, just how I prefer it (I hate soft lighting because I work in my room so I like to have “productive lighting.”)  The shower has reliable hot water and good pressure.  The toilet flushes normally.  There are sufficient common pots and pans that I can use to make my paleo meals.  The only things I don’t have are an oven, a fridge or a washing machine.  So far, I haven’t needed the fridge. I don’t eat anything that needs to be refrigerated if you can believe it.  I have only needed the oven when I made the cupcakes and the owner had no problem letting me use it, especially if that meant she got some cupcakes.  The only thing that sucks is not having a washing machine.  I washed 2 loads of clothes by hand today for the first time ever and although I felt like I was getting a very “primal” upper body workout, I really didn’t enjoy washing my clothes for over an hour…boo!  Gaston has a washing machine in his room so I have to make some chocolates as a fair exchange for the use of his washer.

I’m still figuring out how to get steady internet in my house.  I am currently stealing wifi from other places and the connection isn’t very strong.  I have a roommate that I think has a modem that I can hook up to but he hasn’t been here all week and won’t be back until Friday.  I really hate having unreliable internet — I feel so disconnected!

Other than that I think these next 3 months are going to be a blast.  I feel really good here.
